80% Fewer Flight Delays in Hungary This Year – Historic Improvement in Hungarian Airspace
In 2025, Hungarian air traffic achieved outstanding results: thanks to HungaroControl experts, there were 80% fewer flight delays than a year earlier, while traffic grew by 7.3%.
🚀 Record Traffic, Yet Fewer Delays
The summer months were particularly strong:
- in August, nearly 137,400 aircraft passed through Hungarian airspace
- the peak day was July 26 with 4,356 aircraft movements – a historic record
- at Budapest Airport, 476 departing and arriving flights were handled on August 3 in a single day
Despite this, the average delay dropped from 3 minutes to 0.6 minutes. In August, the number of delays fell to one-tenth of last year's figure.
🌤️ What Still Caused Delays?
More than 60% of remaining delays were caused by weather – mainly summer storms and necessary airspace restrictions.
Importantly, the improvement did not come at the expense of safety. Aviation safety indicators remain excellent.
👨✈️ The Secret to Success: More Controllers, New Technology, Better Cooperation
HungaroControl made improvements in several areas:
- ✈️ increased the number of air traffic controllers by nearly 10%
- 🟦 up to 9 sectors could operate simultaneously
- ⚙️ new technologies, such as camera-based turnaround time monitoring
- 💼 close cooperation with Budapest Airport
- 🌤️ meteorological support from HungaroMet
- 🔄 new airspace structure: more balanced traffic distribution
All this contributed to Hungary becoming one of Europe's most punctual air navigation service providers.
