A significant expansion is expected in air traffic between Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport and major Chinese cities. According to the announcement, instead of the current 42 weekly flights, 77 flights will soon connect Hungary and China.

The development was reported by Péter Szijjártó after meeting his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Budapest.

Significant growth in passenger and cargo traffic

Under the new agreement, of the 77 weekly flights:

  • 35 will be passenger flights
  • 42 will be cargo flights

operating between Hungary and China. The expansion could further strengthen Budapest's role in European–Asian air transport and as one of the region's important cargo hubs.

Seven Chinese cities already accessible

Currently, seven major Chinese cities are accessible with direct flights from Budapest through various airlines, including:

  • Air China – Beijing and Chongqing
  • China Eastern Airlines / Shanghai Airlines – Shanghai, Ningbo and Xi'an
  • China Southern Airlines – Guangzhou
  • Hainan Airlines – Shenzhen

These flights currently represent 21 weekly passenger connections between the two countries.

Further frequency increases expected

Not all specific routes have been announced for the expansion yet, but the two countries have been working on expanding air connections since late 2024.

Air China had previously announced that it would increase the frequency of its Beijing–Budapest flights in the 2026 summer schedule.
